Medical Ultrasound
Programme Aims and Objectives
The programme aims to produce an independent thinking, graduate sonographer who will be able to:
- Understand and demonstrate coherent and detailed subject knowledge and professional competencies some of which will be informed by recent research/scholarship in sonography
- Explain a range of scientific principles relevant to more complex areas of sonography and their application in clinical practice;
- Deploy accurately standard techniques of analysis and enquiry within sonography;
- Demonstrate a conceptual understanding which enables the development and sustaining of an argument;
- Evaluate and comment on aspects of recent research and/or scholarship;
- Critically appraise potential innovations and their relevant evidence base in the field of sonography;
- Evaluate the uncertainty, ambiguity and limitations of knowledge in sonography and critically reflect on their own practice and that of others within and outside the field of sonography;
- Critically evaluate scholarly reviews and primary sources;
- Apply knowledge and understanding in order to initiate and carry out a project related to a specific area of sonography, utilising critical appraisal of evidence, application of research methods, scientific and technical thinking, problem-solving and communication skills;
- Demonstrate clinical and professional competencies at the level of a safe beginner as outlined in relevant standards of proficiencies and codes of conduct and conform to professional boundaries and norms where applicable
- Competently perform a range of ultrasound scans, within a defined scope of practice, in practice under supervision
- Develop transferable skills including critical thinking, problem solving, independent learning, scientific enquiry, professional working, and reflective practice.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:
- Undertake ultrasound examinations on a range of non-complex patients in a safe manner in accordance with national and local policies and legislation.
- Describe the application of local Trust policies relevant to ultrasound practice, specifically ultrasound safety, health and safety, infection control and moving and handling.
- Demonstrate a self-awareness of interpersonal behaviour and professionalism on patient management, cultural sensitivity, and care and communication with service users and carers,
- Be able to reflect on the ultrasound examination for adequacy and understand clinical details.
- Demonstrate an awareness of inter-professional working
