Diagnostic Radiography

Programme Aims and Objectives

The programme will:

  • Provide students with an excellent and varied learning experience, prepared and delivered in an inspiring way.
  • Provide students with the knowledge, competencies and communication skills, necessary to become effective and competent radiographer practitioners who will make a valuable contribution to healthcare;
  • Enable students to become compassionate and reflective, evidence based practitioners, with the ability to develop independently and within a team.
  • Inspire students to make positive choices, personally, professionally and for the evidence base of health care.
  • Provide students with a wide range of subject specific and transferable skills, which will allow entry into healthcare, research and non-subject specific professions.
  • Enable students, through the acquisition of key skills, to continue their learning and career development following completion of their studies.
  • Provide opportunities for students to develop skills to negotiate work-based learning and independently arrange elective placements in the UK or abroad.

The programme aims to produce an independent thinking, graduate radiographer. In order to achieve this students will be able to:

  • Understand and apply detailed subject knowledge and competencies that are underpinned by current practice, relevant research and evidenced based practice in radiography and medical imaging;
  • Be a safe, reflective practitioner who is able to deliver care as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Utilise effective communication skills with service users and carers and other members of the multidisciplinary healthcare team;
  • Deploy accurately standard techniques of analysis and enquiry within radiography;
  • Demonstrate a conceptual understanding which enables the development and sustaining of an argument;
  • Critically evaluate the evidence for best practice;
  • Apply their knowledge and understanding in order to initiate and carry out an extended piece of work or project focussed on radiography practice;
  • Practice within professional boundaries and guidance of professional bodies such as the Health and Care Professions Council and the Society and College of Radiographers, and recognise the need for lifelong learning;
  • Demonstrate successful completion of Health and Care Professions CouncilStandards of Proficiency’

Learning outcomes

On completion of this module students should be able to:

  • Evaluate the effectiveness of an imaging modality in producing a diagnosis for a wide variety of conditions and pathologies and discuss the clinical indications in relation to the imaging modality used and the appropriateness of departmental protocols
  • Demonstrate an ability to image a broad range of service users, utilise a range of imaging modalities and in a variety of environments.
  • Undertake physical patient care during examinations and demonstrate an ability to adapt basic technique in light of the physical and psychological challenges presented by radiographic imaging on patients with a variety of conditions
  • Demonstrate effective management of self well-being, workload and evaluate their inter-professional working in a range of clinical environments
  • Be able to discuss a wide variety of images, from different specialities, for acceptability; and begin to reflect upon image evaluation and preliminary evaluation of chest radiographs and CT head
  • Undertake radiographic procedures on challenging patients in a controlled environment or simple patients in challenging environments and perform standard examinations in CT and MRI
